The air we breath is an essential component for a healthy live. Not surprisingly, health and disease reflect in the exhaled air and are linked to the “scent of breath”. In a society in which volatile chemicals are increasingly recognised as sources of disease, the analysis of exhaled air, or “breathomics”, becomes an important and paramount instrument in monitoring health and disease. In the last 40 years, progress has been made to implement the analysis of this breath biopsy for the management of a plethora of diseases. During this journal club, the promising aspects of breathomics will be discussed, covering potential applications, its pitfalls and future needs.
